The Manaia:: “is the guardian of the Sea, Earth, and Sky”
Depicted with the head of a bird, the body of a man, and the tail of a fish, the Manaia is a spiritual guardian, to ward off danger and protect against intruders. It acts as a provider and protector over the earth, sea, and sky.
Māori believe there is a deep kinship between humans and the natural world. This connection is expressed through kaitiakitanga – the responsibility to protect, nurture and preserve the environment; including the Tangata Whenua (the people of the land), which extends to manaakitanga – the principle of care and generosity toward people of all nations.
We created Manaia, LLC., as the presence of the guardian (kaitiaki) is especially relevant today.
